The Brazilian butt lift – also known as gluteal augmentation or buttocks enhancement with natural fat transfer – takes your own fat from areas such as the thighs, lower back, abdomen or hips and injects that fat into your buttocks to create a shapelier contour.
What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
The Brazilian Butt Lift is a common term that is used to describe the combined procedure of removing fatty tissue with liposuction and placing it into the buttocks. This procedure has the goal of contouring the body as well as adding shape and fullness to the buttocks. Here at Liposuction NYC Specialty Clinic we use tumescent liposuction to facilitate the removal and transfer of fat to the buttocks. Using this tumescent technique, we can sculpt the body of our patients to enhance the buttocks region.
Who is an Ideal Candidate for a Butt Augmentation?
One of the main considerations when evaluating a patient is whether they have enough fat stored in their body. There should be enough fat available in the potential donor areas.
Ideal Candidates for a Brazilian Butt Lift are potential Patients who have a fair amount of excess fat deposits, usually around the abdomen, back, arms and legs. source (www.brazilianbuttlift.com)
Liposuction only occurs above the muscle and below the skin. A person with intra-abdominal or visceral fat is not a suited candidate.
For patients with insufficient fat deposits, the doctor may advise weight gain before the BBL to qualify for the procedure.
The BMI, or Body Mass Index, is used by physicians as a risk indicator to assess if a potential patient could be eligible for an invasive procedure such as BBL. With BMIs greater than 30-35 the risks for complications during surgery increase. Some plastic surgeons may consider patients, with BMIs over 35, not suited for surgery. Even for some doctors, a BMI of 30 is the limit.
A healthy BMI is between 15-24, the maximum recommended BMI for surgery is around 30. A BMI higher than 30 is generally associated with increased surgical risks. The closer the patients are to their ideal weight the better the results. It is best to be within 10 pounds of your weight goal for at least three months prior to the BBL.

After a BBL surgery, patients should be prepared to properly care for themselves and the newly transferred fat cells in order to achieve the best outcomes from the procedure. The surgery itself could take between 2 and 6 hours depending on the amount of fat to be harvested and the number of areas on the body to be treated. Some doctors may keep patients overnight for observation following the procedure. On the first night after you’re dismissed from the hospital, it would be best to ask a friend or loved-one to help you out around the house.
How well a patient takes care of themselves following a Brazilian butt lift procedure will often determine whether fat cells successfully develop an adequate blood supply and survive or not.

Set a reminder on your smartphone or some other device to help you remember to take your meds religiously and on the proper schedule. Avoiding infection will speed up recovery and help you achieve the best results possible from your procedure.
- Wear compression garments as prescribed
Your doctor will likely give you compression garments to wear as your body heals from the liposuction. These compression garments will help your skin heal properly to give you the smoothest, most natural-looking results. Wear the garments as your doctor instructs you to do. Wait for his permission to stop wearing them.
- Do not sit directly for at least 3 weeks
Patients are advised not to sit directly on the freshly transferred fat cells for at least 3 weeks. It’s best to plan ahead for this facet of the recovery process and make sure that you have furnishings and appropriate space to keep weight off your buttocks. - Drink plenty of water
After surgery, your body will need to detox so it will need lots of water. By drinking plenty of water, you can also help your body build up the necessary blood supply to feed newly transferred fat cells.
- Don’t smoke & Don’t Drink
Smoking decreases circulation and the new fat cells need a solid blood supply to survive. Avoid smoking during the recovery. Also, Alcohol can dehydrate the body, but during recovery, you need to stay hydrated to help build a new blood supply to transferred blood cells.
How to preserve your BBL Results
Enduring results become apparent after the recovery period. During recovery, some of the fat cells are reabsorbed by the body, and a new blood supply must form to supply the healthiest transferred fat cells. After this process is complete, the BBL results are mostly permanent.
It’s important to remember that the transferred fat cells will behave much like the fat cells in the rest of your body. In other words, transplanted BBL fat cells will be susceptible to weight changes.
To increase the odds of long-lasting results, patients need to maintain and not lose weight after their procedure.
- Don’t sit on your buttocks for the specified period of time recommended by your doctor (usually 2 to 8 weeks). If you need to sit, use a special BBL pillow or follow a special sitting position. Only sit if you absolutely need to and only for short periods of time.
- Avoid putting pressure on the grafted areas. Rest on your stomach or sides and avoid placing stress on the areas where fat cells have been transplanted. If you had a tummy tuck with your BBL, resting on your stomach is not recommended.
- Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle – Don’t smoke and eat well-balanced, healthy meals. The results of your BBL can last for a long period of time if you maintain a healthy lifestyle.
- Wear your compression garment all day, every day (24 x7) for the first 3 weeks. Make sure it fits properly and that it’s comfortable and does not squeeze the buttocks. If your compression garment leaves marks on your skin, it may be too tight. Report this problem to your doctor.
When and How to sit after the surgery?
Doctors recur to different techniques to perform BBL surgery and therefore the different recommendations about sitting after a BBL.
Sitting recommendations are varied.
Some doctors recommend avoiding sitting at all during the first 2 weeks after surgery. Others recommend sitting only using a bbl cushion during the first 6 weeks of the recovery.
Newly injected fat cells initially do not have a blood supply. Until they develop a blood supply, it’s easy for these fat cells to get damaged by pressure if it is applied for a long period of time.
The first 2 to 6 weeks after surgery are a critical time period for transplanted fat cells. Prolonged pressure caused by sitting on the fat cells will cause them to die.
During the first 6 weeks of the BBL recovery time, the body will generate a blood supply around the new fat cells. Once this blood supply is established, it is safe to sit without the BBL cushion.
If you must sit during these first weeks, do it only when absolutely necessary and always use the BBL pillow. Try to rest by laying on your stomach or legs.
What are the Risks?
All surgical procedures involve some risk of complications. These risks cannot be ignored, but there are things that patients can do to minimize the risk of complications. Patients who undergo BBL surgery receive both liposuction treatment as well as a treatment that involves fat grafting. The risks associated with the procedure pertaining to these two surgical treatments.
Liposuction procedures in which more than 5 liters of fluid is removed is considered a High-Volume Liposuction treatment. High-Volume Liposuction involves a significantly higher risk of complications than tumescent liposuction performed on a normal volume of fat.
High-Volume Liposuction requires the careful monitoring of fluids in the body both during the procedure and through the recovery period.
